NJ weather: Sunday storms and flooding headed for Jersey Shore

The Jersey Shore is in for a soaking on Sunday, as severe thunderstorms move through the region and residents remain under a Coastal Flood Advisory and Flood Watch.

Ocean, western Monmouth, Middlesex, Atlantic and southeast Burlington counties could see a foot of flooding in low-lying and vulnerable areas as a cold front moves across New Jersey later Sunday, according to the National Weather Service's Mount Holly station.

Monmouth County residents are under a Flood Watch from 6 p.m. Sunday through 2 a.m. Monday, where 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected. Ocean County remains under a Coastal Flood Watch until midnight. Minor flooding is expected along Barnegat Bay and Sandy Hook during evening high tides on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Meteorologists say 4 inches or more of rain are possible in isolated areas.

Residents in neighborhoods vulnerable to flooding should anticipate road closures and make preparations, according to the weather service.

Rip tides and rough surf conditions closed many beaches to swimming on Saturday as Tropical Storm Ernesto created dangerous swim conditions along the eastern United States. A high rip current risk remains in effect through Monday evening.

Due to potentially hazardous water conditions, swimming was not allowed at Island Beach State Park on Sunday.
