Honey Bxby of Asbury Park part of big female-centric 24 Hrs of Peace in Newark

Let's hear it for the ladies.

Specifically, the Jersey ladies. The Garden State will be well represented at the annual 24 Hrs of Peace event, which runs from 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 in the West Ward of Newark between Central Avenue and South 10th Street.

The theme this year is “Women for Peace.” Jersey's Rah Digga, Newark; Leah Jenea, Newark; Justina Valentine, Clifton; Lady London, East Orange; and Honey Bxby, Asbury Park, will be on the block. Mya, Monie Love, Lady Luck, Lola Brooke, Yo-Yo, Nikki D, Roxanne Shante, The Lady of Rage, Sunshine Anderson, Asian Doll, Juciiy 2xs and more will also perform.

The annual free event, co-founded by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka in 2012 when he was a city councilman, advocates for a violence-free community by creating a “time out” from conflict for 24 hours, according to organizers.

“Art and music are powerful forces that can uplift communities. In areas affected by poverty and violence, community events and concerts bring people together, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose,” Newark Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery director Kyleesha Wingfield-Hill said in a statement. “These gatherings create safe spaces where creativity flourishes, offering alternatives to crime and providing hope.”

The 24 Hrs of Peace on Friday and Saturday culminates a Peace Week in the city that started Friday, Aug. 17 and includes an Artist Against Violence concert Wednesday, Aug. 21 at Newark Symphony Hall’s Terrace Ballroom on Broad Street.

The performance by Honey Bxby is a rare Jersey appearance from the Asbury Park native. Bxby, aka Ajaysiya Byers, is the first R&B musician from Asbury Park to sign with a major label since Billy Brown of Ray, Goodman and Brown signed up with Polydor Records in 1979. Bxby signed to the Atlantic Records imprint Rebirth/ART@WAR.

Her appearance on the BET Soul Train Awards, singing the torchy rhythmic banger “Touchin’ “ on the Amplified stage for emerging artists, turned lots of heads. Her latest single is the street burner “Left Eye.”

“We fuse the power of hip-hop music and spoken word to lift, heal, and inspire peace in our city, empowering every resident in that process, and bringing healing, hope and happiness into everyday life,” Baraka of 24 Hrs of Peace said in a statement. “During this 24 Hrs of Peace, we celebrate the reality that women are at the center of our city’s evolution as a model of peace, progress and prosperity.”

    Dying to know Louyah

Keansburg's Louyah is “Dying to Know You.”

“Dying To Know You” was the name of Louyah's aborted national summer tour, which was called off due to “issues beyond my control,” said Louyah on social media. One show of the tour was kept: his Friday, Aug. 23 concert at the House of Independents in Asbury Park.

“My hometown show is still a go,” said Louyah, aka Louis Vigorito, on his socials. “I will see you all in Asbury Park.”

It strikes us that a lot of people know the multi-genre Louyah, as he has two viral hits, “I Used to Care” and “You,” and more than six million likes on TikTok.

Go : Louyah with Michael Minelli, 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, House Of Independents, 572 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park. $20. www.houseofindependents.com.
