If you recently bought lunch meat, you'll want to read this before getting sick. Especially if you're reading in New Jersey.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued its largest recall for deli meats after a listeria outbreak.

Boar's Head issued a recall last month which included more than 7 million pounds of its deli meat due to possible listeria contamination. The CDC said there have been more than 10 other cases in recent weeks.

Overall, nine people have died and 57 people have been hospitalized over 19 states. Five people who got sick, including one of the deaths, happened in New Jersey.

The CDC issued recalls on products that include EST. 12612 or P-12612 inside the USDA mark of inspection. According to CNN, the products include liverwurst, ham, bologna, sausage and roasted bacon.

Here is a list of all the recalled meats.

    What is Listeria?

According to the Mayo Clinic, "Listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with weakened immune systems," it says on its website. "It's most commonly caused by eating improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products.

"Healthy people rarely become ill from listeria infection, but the disease can be fatal to unborn babies, newborns and people with weakened immune systems. Prompt antibiotic treatment can help curb the effects of listeria infection.

"Listeria bacteria can survive refrigeration and even freezing. So people who are at higher risk of serious infections should avoid eating the types of food most likely to contain listeria bacteria."

    Listeria symptoms

The following information comes from the CDC: Listeria is especially harmful to people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or with weakened immune systems.

This is because Listeria is more likely to spread beyond their gut to other parts of their body, resulting in a severe condition known as invasive listeriosis.

For people who are pregnant, Listeria can cause pregnancy loss, premature birth or a life-threatening infection in their newborn.

For people who are 65 years or older or who have a weakened immune system, Listeria often results in hospitalization and sometimes death.

Symptoms usually start within two weeks after eating food contaminated with Listeria but may start as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after.

Pregnant people usually have fever, muscle aches and tiredness.

People who are not pregnant usually have fever, muscle aches and tiredness. They may also get a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or seizures.
