For Europe, this was the first day of World War II -- though no one would call it that yet nor imagine the horrors that were to come over the next six years, namely the deaths of about 50 million people.

The United States was technically neutral, although that would change in little more than two years with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In the meantime, life would go on with little disruption for the people living in 1939 at the Jersey Shore.

LONDON (Passed through British censorship) — It was officially reiterated today that Britain and France were determined to fulfill their obligations to Poland despite German Chancellor Adolf Hitler’s Reichstag speech.

King George VI of the United Kingdom signed an order in council for complete British army, navy and aviation mobilization.

An authoritative announcement, issued as the British cabinet met to decide a course of action, told of determination to fulfill the obligations to the utmost if Hitler’s proclamation should “as it would seem to mean, that Germany has declared war on Poland.”

LAKEWOOD — Township Committee Chairman George C. Johnson last night declared that he had not referred to either state Highway Commissioner E. Donald Sterner or Chief Engineer James Logan when he stated on July 27 that “some cheap politician either in the county or state was holding up Lakewood’s share of state-aid money.”

In a letter to Commissioner Sterner, Mr. Johnson explained that he had blamed neither of the two officials for delaying payment of funds for the South Lake Drive construction project. He said, however, that he felt “somewhere along the line political pressure had been brought to bear by someone against this particular project.”
