A tropical storm brought more than a foot of rain to southern North Carolina, a historical downpour unseen in the area in hundreds of years that caused life-threatening flash flooding Monday.

That same system is heading north, passing through New Jersey, but not with the same strength.

"We're supposed to get a little bit of the remnant rain across our area the next couple days, but it won't be very much," said meteorologist Patrick O'Hara from the National Weather Service, Mount Holly office.

Most of the system dissipated through the North and South Carolina region. Central and North Jersey should get close to a tenth of an inch of rain. South Jersey, closer to Delaware, around Cape May County, should get between half an inch and one inch of rain.

Skies at the Jersey Shore are expected to remain mostly cloudy until Friday night. The weekend should boast partly sunny skies.

The weather service still issued a coastal flooding advisory for Cumberland County and surrounding areas including Cape May County and Atlantic County. Potential flooding could occur between 7 p.m. Tuesday into Wednesday. Up to 6 inches of inundation is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Dangerous seas ahead off the shore

Out in the sea, conditions are expected to be hazardous. The weather service advises small craft not to sail until the advisory is lifted at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The small craft advisory applies to the entire coastline of New Jersey.

There is also a high risk for dangerous rip currents that could sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper waters. Rip currents will be active in the Cape May area until 1 a.m. Wednesday through Wednesday evening in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

"If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help," the weather service advises.
