2 million Fisher-Price infant swings recalled after five babies die

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Fisher-Price announced the recall of Fisher-Price Snuga Swings on Thursday. The product is tied to the deaths of five infants.

Fisher-Price says the swing should never be used for sleep and bedding materials should not be added to it.

Five babies' deaths were reported between 2012 and 2022 when the product was used for sleep. The recall notice notes that in most of the incidents, the babies, age 1 to 3 months, were unrestrained and bedding materals had been added.

The notice says that when bedding material is added or the product is used for sleep, the headrest and body support insert on the seat pad can increase the risk of suffocation.

Consumers should immediately remove the headrest by cutting the tether and the body support insert before continuing to use the swing for activities while babies are awake. The product should never be used for sleep or have bedding or other material added, even after the headrest and body support are removed.

Fisher-Price will provide a $25 refund to consumers who remove and destroy the headrest and body support insert. Instructions can be found at service.mattel.com .

Approximately 2.1 million swings were sold in the United States since 2010, with 99,000 sold in Canada and about 500 in Mexico. They were sold at Amazon, Toys R Us, Walmart/Sams Club and Target nationwide from October 2010 through January 2024 for about $160.

According to the notice, the recalled infant swing has a total of 21 models that have the same design with minor differences in fabric colors and toy accessories.

Parents and caregivers should not use any inclined seated products, such as swings, gliders, soothers and rockers, for infant sleep. They also should never leave infants in them while unsupervised, unrestrained or with bedding material.

The CPSC urges caregivers to to place infants on their backs for sleep.

"The best place for an infant to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard, with nothing but a fitted sheet. Infants who fall asleep in an inclined or upright position should be moved to a safe sleep environment with a firm, flat surface such as a crib, bassinet, or play yard," the CPSC says.
