Bruce Springsteen has just added a new member to the E Street Band. Who is he?

Many were called the fifth member of the Beatles but there's only one 20th member of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

It's filmmaker Thom Zimny, said Springsteen after the New York premiere of Zimny's latest film, “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band,” Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

“Thom is the 20th E Street Band member,” said Springsteen in a post-screening Q&A with Zimny, Steven Van Zandt and manager Jon Landau with moderator Jon Sykes of iHeartMedia.

“If you look back at the video age, we made terrible videos and there was no Thom Zimny. Finally, one day, there was a Thom Zimny and Thom has allowed me to explore a visual language which we had not a chance to develop. It simply wasn't a part of our work life. Thom, I have to thank you for the gift to me of that visual language.”

Zimny, a Point Pleasant native, doesn't play a guitar but he slings a mighty camera. He's been visually telling the story of Springsteen and the E Street Band since the 2001 Emmy-winning “Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Live in New York City.”

His other Springsteen-related works include “Wings for Wheels: The Making of Born to Run,” which won a Grammy; the film version of “Springsteen on Broadway,” which also won an Emmy; 2019's “Western Stars;” and the 2020 documentary “Bruce Springsteen's Letter to You.”

Zimny’s non-Springsteen credits include “Elvis Presley: The Searcher,” “The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash,” and the Sylvester Stallone doc “Sly.” Zimny's latest, “Road Diary,” will debut Friday, Oct. 25 on Hulu and Disney+.

“We didn't film the band in the first half of our career because I was very superstitious,” Springsteen said. “Amazingly, there is film that exists just by happenstance. But when the band got back (in 1999) we started with 'Live in New York City,' so really, it's just sort of something where once we got going on this film ('Road Diary') I said 'Thom, we're starting rehearsals, come down and bring your camera'.”

“Road Diary” begins with rehearsals at the Vogel theater, part of the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank.

“My conversations with Thom are very simple,” Springsteen quipped. “One, how do I look? That's Thom's job security.”

“Road Diary” examines the formation of the current tour and the band's interpersonal relationships. The film also speaks to why E Street Band member, and Springsteen wife, Patti Scialfa is not part of the tour. She has multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer, Scialfa reveals in the film.

“I couldn't be there without Patti,” Springsteen said. “There would be no tours. Her support is just incredible on tour -- I have to send my love out to her.”

The audience in the theater then gave a warm round of applause.

Springsteen, Van Zandt, Landau, and Zimny attended a reception in the museum lounge after the screening, which was attended by Pam Springsteen; Danny Clinch; actress and Van Zandt wife Maureen Van Zandt; sportscaster Bob Costas; DJ Rich Russo; Gary Dell'Abate from the Howard Stern show; comedian Sandra Bernhard; Robert Santelli, Eileen Chapman and Jeri Houseworth from the Bruce Springsteen Archives; E Street Horns members Anthony Almonte and Ozzie Melendez; and actor Jeremy Allen White, who's set to play the Boss in the upcoming movie, “Deliver Me From Nowhere.”

Springsteen and White locked in for a short conversation, and took pics, at the “Road Diary” reception.

A “Road Diary”-related ABC George Stephanopoulos special “Bruce Springsteen: Backstage and Backstreets” airs 10 p.m. ET Sunday, Oct. 20 and streams next day on Hulu and Disney+.

The E Street Band currently has 18 members with core members supplemented by the E Street Horns and E Street Choir. They are Max Weinberg, drums; Steven Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren, guitars; Patti Scialfa, vocals and guitar; Garry Tallent, bass; Roy Bittan and Charles Giordano, keyboards; Jake Clemons, saxophone; Soozie Tyrell, fiddle and vocals; Anthony Almonte, percussion; the E Street Band Horns: Curt Ramm and Barry Danielian on trumpet, Eddie Manion on sax, and Ozzie Melendez on trombone; and the E Street Choir: Curtis King, Michelle Moore, Lisa Lowell and Ada Dyer.

Add Springsteen and Zimny and that makes 20.
