    West Virginia Woman Turns 105

    2024-07-18

Grace Lough Hedrick, the oldest living citizen of Pendleton County, celebrated her 105th birthday this summer. Affectionately known as "Amazing Grace," her life is a testament to resilience and joy.

    A Global Celebration

In honor of her milestone birthday, Grace received an outpouring of love from around the world. She received cards from all 50 states, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, and Guam. The global recognition highlights the admiration and respect she has earned throughout her remarkable life.

    Living Independently at 105

Grace lives in an eight-room house with a flat roof, her home since 1926. Despite her age, she continues to live independently with some assistance from her family. Her determination and independence are truly inspiring.

    A Lifetime of Achievements

Grace's life is filled with extraordinary accomplishments. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1939 and married Raymond Hedrick later that year. (Raymond passed away in 1994.)

Even in her later years, Grace has shown remarkable vitality:

    • At 89, she roto-tilled her own garden.
    • At 90, she walked to the top of Seneca Rocks and spent the summer raking hay with a 50-year-old Ford tractor.
    • At 91, she went sledding with her family.
    • She gathered eggs daily throughout her 90s.

    Slowing Down but Staying Strong

In the past nine years, Grace’s eyesight has diminished, causing her to slow down. However, her spirit remains unbroken, and she continues to inspire those around her with her resilience and positivity.

    Gratitude and Recognition

The flood of cards, calls, texts, and messages on her 105th birthday lifted Grace’s spirits immensely. She expresses heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support.

Grace Lough Hedrick embodies the West Virginia spirit of rugged determination and joy for life’s adventures.
