With the rising costs of almost everything, back-to-school time can become financially cumbersome for families. To help alleviate this fiscal burden, Governor Jim Justice has announced the return of the West Virginia Sales Tax Holiday. This special event, which begins on Friday, August 2, and runs through Monday, August 5, offers residents a chance to save money on school supplies, instructional materials, clothes, and certain electronics.

    What You Can Buy Tax-Free

The Sales Tax Holiday provides an excellent opportunity for families to purchase back-to-school items without the added cost of state sales tax. Qualifying items include:

    • Clothing: Items priced at $125 or less
    • School supplies: Items costing $50 or less
    • School instructional materials: Items priced at $20 or less
    • Laptops and tablets: Devices with a retail price of $500 or less
    • Sports equipment: Items costing $150 or less

These items can be purchased tax-free in various ways, including in-store, online, custom orders, mail orders, or via the telephone. However, there are some stipulations:

    • The item or items must be paid for and delivered to the purchaser during the Sales Tax Holiday.
    • If the customer orders and pays for the item and the order is accepted by the seller for immediate shipment, the purchase qualifies even if it does not arrive within the holiday window.

For a complete list of eligible items and additional information about the Sales Tax Holiday, you can visit the West Virginia State Tax Department website.

    Benefits for Shoppers and Businesses

The holiday isn't just beneficial for shoppers. Local and area businesses also stand to gain from increased sales during this period. According to Governor Justice, the average customer will save at least 6% on every qualified purchase and up to 7% if they buy items in a municipality that has imposed a local sales tax. This savings can make a significant difference for families preparing for the upcoming school year.

West Virginia is one of fewer than 20 states in the U.S. that holds a tax-free holiday for residents.

As families gear up for the school year, the West Virginia Sales Tax Holiday provides a welcome relief, allowing them to stretch their dollars further. Whether shopping for clothes, supplies, or electronics, this tax-free weekend is an excellent opportunity to prepare for the new academic year without breaking the bank.
