Mojave Water Agency receives government accounting award

The Apple Valley-based Mojave Water Agency recently received a top government award for transparency in accounting.

The agency received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the U.S. and Canada.

The award was received for the agency’s annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023, Mojave Water Agency officials said.

“As the new chief financial officer, I am proud to join an organization with a strong finance team that strives to prepare its financial reports in accordance with the highest standards of government financial reporting to earn such a prestigious award,” said Lauren Warrem, who joined the agency on June 17.

The certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition for excellence in state and local government financial reporting, agency officials said.

To earn the certificate of achievement, a government must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized annual comprehensive financial report that satisfies both generally accepted accounting principles and applicable requirements. Entries are judged by an impartial panel.

The Mojave Water Agency was established in 1960 in response to concerns regarding the overdraft of the region’s water basins. The agency is currently one of 29 state water contractors with rights to take deliveries from the California Aqueduct to provide additional water supplies to its 4,900-square-mile service area.
