    High Desert-based cadets promoted to California Highway Patrol officers

    The latest round of California Highway Patrol Academy officer promotions includes two High Desert cadets.

    Jasmine Delgado of Apple Valley completed cadet training at the CHP Academy in Sacramento and has been assigned duty at the CHP’s Barstow Area office.

    Officer Delgado graduated from Victor Valley High School in 2013. Before attending the CHP Academy, she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University, San Bernardino. She also worked as a carrier for the United States Postal Service.

    Michael Viramontes of Hesperia also completed cadet training and was assigned duty at the CHP’s Barstow Area office.

    Officer Viramontes graduated from Hesperia High School in 2018. Before attending the CHP Academy, he earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and history from Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio.

    • Omar Torres of Ontario. Assigned duty at the CHP’s Ukiah, Fort Bragg Resident Post Area office.
    • Steven Castillo of Ontario. Assigned duty at the CHP’s San Gorgonio Pass Area office.
    • Ricky Rybnikar-Acosta of Yucaipa. Assigned duty at the CHP’s Baldwin Park Area office.
    • Kevin Castellon of Moreno Valley. Assigned duty at the CHP’s San Gorgonio Pass Area office.
    • Jared Escoto of Riverside. Assigned duty at the CHP’s West Los Angeles Area office.
    • Jose Tejeda of Santa Ana. Assigned duty at the CHP’s Bishop Area office.
    • Russell Strolin of Canyon Lake. Assigned duty at the CHP’s Ukiah, Fort Bragg Resident Post Area office.
    • Scott Andrade of Brea. Assigned duty at the CHP’s Santa Fe Springs Area office.
    • Eric Sotelo of Whittier. Assigned duty at the CHP’s Santa Fe Springs Area office.
    • Sebastian Aguayo of Calexico. Assigned duty at the CHP’s South Los Angeles Area office.
    • David Barboza of El Centro. Assigned duty at the CHP’s San Jose Area office.

    The CHP Academy

    CHP Academy cadet training includes policing, leadership, professionalism and ethics, and cultural diversity. Additionally, training in mental illness response and crisis intervention techniques.

    Cadet instruction also covers patrol operations, crash investigation, first aid, and the arrest of suspected violators, including those who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

    The cadets also receive training in traffic control, report writing, recovery of stolen vehicles, assisting the motoring public, issuing citations, emergency scene management, and knowledge of various codes including the Vehicle Code, Penal Code, and Health and Safety Code.
