TRI-CITIES, Wash. — Mikey’s Chance Canine Rescue is closing its doors to animal intakes right now. Rescue officials said there’s an overwhelming number of dogs in need in the community right now.

Members of the Board of Directors with Mikey’s Chance said there’s ways the community can help in their time of need. Mikey’s Chance officials said they need to focus on the dogs in their care right now as more requests are coming in than the rescue is able to help.

Stephanie Stadelman, on the Mikey’s Chance Board of Directors, said there’s between 200 to 230 dogs in the care of the rescue right now.

One other factor, boarding for the dogs not in foster homes right now is costing Mikey’s Chance $8,000 each month, Stadelman said. Once the number of dogs goes down, Stadelman said intakes could open up again.

“We're really hoping that this can be a really temporary situation and that we can open up our intakes again because we know that a lot of dogs are in need. But to do that, we really need to get the dogs we currently have in boarding out, because it's just not fair for them for us to continue to intake dogs when they've been sitting in a kennel for a year,” said Stadelman.

Here are some ways Mikey’s Chance is asking for the community’s help.

The first is the need for foster homes . The rescue is putting an emphasis on a need for people to open their homes up, especially to medium and large dogs.

The next is donations . Mikey’s Chance officials said vet bills and boarding are the biggest expenses.

Another is fundraising . The rescue is looking for people to help coordinate fundraising activities to bring in more consistent funds to cover costs.

The last is education . This includes the public learning about the importance of spaying and neutering animals, with an emphasis on avoiding backyard breeders.

Again, Mikey’s Chance said this pause in intakes is temporary, until it’s able to serve the dogs already in its care. Find out more on getting involved here .
