Corvettes roll into Kennewick on the journey to the National Corvette Museum

KENNEWICK, Wash. — It’s a sight only every five years: Corvettes from across the country are taking their seven-day, 2,000 mile trek from the West Coast all the way to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Hundreds of cars stopped by Columbia Park Thursday afternoon for lunch.
“Probably about 240 Corvettes were here, some 240, 250, and by the time we get to Cody, Wyoming, we should have between 350 and 375 Corvettes. We're picking up more and more cars as we go,” explained John Warren, the captain for the Pacific Northwest Corvette Caravan .
“The Chevrolet dealers have been very, very gracious to us, and McCurley Chevrolet is putting on this whole event for us, and they're feeding us lunch,” said Warren.
The caravan took off from a few spots on the coast this morning and met in Kennewick for the Day-1 lunch. The drivers depart, and head northeast to spend the first night in Spokane.
While chatting with some of the folks at Columbia Park, our team met Peter Durkee, who said he might have been the first casualty of the journey.
“This is the first day. We had a rough start at home with a tractor left in the field and a truck not working and a safe not closing. But we got here and we thought it would be a start, and I think we might be the first casualty of the caravan going back to the factory, and this is the culprit right here,” explained Peter Durkee. He held up a nail; one that got stuck in his tire just south of the Tri-Cities, on U.S. 395. “It looks like a little sword that got stuck in my thing. But I have to shout out to the guys at Discount Tire, that tire there was flat as can be, and it's a racing tire, so it can run with no air, but they put it right. Omar there, and the guys that are there did a fantastic job. So, thank you, Kennewick! Great job, Kennewick!”
Peter Durkee is back on the road, after some local assistance. He’s also the vice president of the Mount Hood Corvette chapter.
At the end of the trip, thousands of Corvettes meet at the National Corvette Museum and assembly plant in KY.
“You can drive a new Corvette, you can tour the factory and see how they're made and you can actually pick up and order a new Corvette at your local Chevy dealer, and pick up the Corvette at the Corvette Museum , and drive it back,” said Durkey.
“It's such a fun car, and it's an American icon. The Corvette has been popular since the first day it was produced, and it's getting more and more popular,” Warren said.
