WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman Mission National Historic site is hosting a special traveling exhibit, "Letitia Carson: An Enduring Spirit of Hope and Freedom" which is open until December 7, 2024.

The exhibit is an eight-panel exhibit on loan from Oregon Black Pioneers which is displayed in the Whitman Mission Visitor Center lobby.

Carson was the first and only Black woman to successfully claim land in Oregon.

It highlights the life of Letitia Carson who was a homesteader and traveled the Oregon Trail in 1845.

Whitman Mission Historic site said during Carson's time on the trail, many Oregon Trail immigrants stopped at Whitman Mission or purchased food and supplies from Marcus Whitman along the way.
