RICHLAND, Wash. -- A beloved Tri-Cities Ice Cream Shop and Gem store had been closed for the last month after the owner lost his wife.

The community rallied, giving their support and now the Amethyst Creamery is open once more.

Apple Valley News Now's Monique Ledesma talked with the owner Doug Tallman about why he decided to keep his business going.

Tallman unpacked store items as he prepared for a bittersweet return.

"My wife had a serious stroke and she ended up passing away about two and a half weeks ago," Tallman said, "so I've been, you know, just trying to deal with that one day at a time."

Tallman said although it felt good to be open again, it hasn't been an easy transition for him but being able to add a touch of sweetness in people's lives, helps.

"Opening and hoping that maybe this will help me get through it, you know, seeing all my customers again will make, you know, put a smile back on my face," Tallman said. "I think that's pretty important and hopefully they'll come in and see us. Everything will be, hopefully, back to some sort of normality for me."

Before being located in Richland, Tallman said he had a rock shop in Sun River, Oregon for nine years. He moved to the Tri-Cities to be closer to family.

Monique asked Tallman what his favorite memory was since being in the business.

"Oh, that's easy. That's the kids, you know, I love seeing them come in and get excited over the rocks and gems and having that ice cream." Tallman said, "I love telling them jokes and stuff. The dad jokes and they have seemed to have a pretty good time with it."

Tallman said that family is everything to him and being able to help other families make memories at his business reminds him of why he's in business in the first place.

"They get a little bag of rocks and they get to pick through the barrel and find the neatest ones." Tallman said, "they just think that is so cool and they're appreciative to mom and dad for bringing them and showing them a new experience. That's really what it's all about, you know, family time and that's what I'm here for."

Tallman said through the month he was closed he was appreciative of the community support."

"Made it a point to read every comment that was made, which was quite a few and like there was over 500 comments. I read them all so I want to thank everybody for all the comments and generous support that they've given me."

As for the future for Amethyst Creamery, Tallman said he's not looking to move out of the Richland community anytime soon. He's now back to his regular store hours.

Visit the Amethyst Creamery at 700 George Washington Way in Richland Wednesday through Sunday.

Leftover showers for today, freeze watches posted for tonight

Snow levels will hover around 4,000’, so Stevens Pass, Blewett Pass, and White Pass could see a bit of snow, but totals over 1 inch would be rather surprising. All of us will start off with mostly cloudy skies, but they’ll turn mostly sunny throughout the day in the Kittitas Valley, Yakima Valley, and Lower Columbia Basin. However, clouds will hang tougher in the Cascades, Blue Foothills, and Blue Mountains. Highs will continue to drop down, as we’ll be a few degrees below average for mid-October. Expect upper-30s in the Cascades, with mid-40s in the Blues. It’ll be in the mid to upper-60s in the Kittitas Valley, Yakima Valley, and Blue Foothills.
