The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has made it easy for first responders or police to quickly find and notify an emergency contact if you carry an Alabama Driver's License. It's a free service, and it only takes a few minutes to add an emergency contact to your license information online. Here's how the service works and how to add an emergency contact to your Alabama driver's license.

Adding an emergency contact does not change your current Alabama driver's license. Your physical license remains the same. The emergency contact information is added to your license information in the ALEA's official state data bank and is only visible to police and emergency dispatchers.

When you visit the ALEA.gov website, make sure you have your license number and social security number handy. You'll have to enter that information to verify your identity. You'll also need the phone number, physical address, and email address of your emergency contact.

On the main page of ALEA.gov, click on the section for "Driver License Online Services." On the next page, you'll see a section for "Account Management," and directly under that, you'll see an option to "Update my emergency contact." You'll then be directed to verify your identity with your personal information.

After verifying your identity, you'll be directed to a page where you can add an emergency contact's name, phone number, and address. You'll also have a space to add what your relationship is to your emergency contact, such as parent, spouse, daughter, etc. If you already have an emergency contact, this is where you can update or change their information if needed.

Remember, adding an emergency contact is always free via the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency official government website at ALEA.gov. There are websites out there, however, that mimic government websites. If you are asked to pay for this service, you are not on the official ALEA website. Click here to go directly to ALEA.gov.
