Supposed Sightings of Mysterious Cryptid Across the State of Georgia

Supposed sightings of a mysterious cryptid have been ongoing for decades across the state of Georgia. Those who claim they have seen this strange creature say it defies explanation. It has the head and face of a wolf or dog, yet it has a humanoid-like body with the ability to stand and walk upright. Because of its canine-like appearance, researchers in the cryptid community have named it "dogman." Here are a few of the numerous eyewitness reports from across the state, including two never-before-published accounts that were recently submitted by Newsbreak followers.

    Backroad Adventure

Me and my buddy were driving south of Savannah, Georgia and headed for Florida. We decided to get off the interstate in Savannah and drive the rest of the way on some backroads. My buddy made a joke that we were going to see a sasquatch. He had no idea what was about to happen. It was about 3 a.m. in the morning so there weren't many cars out at all. We were driving along a dark stretch of road that I think was Hwy. 17 when we saw something that looked like a wolf or really big dog. It was on the opposite edge of the roadway and it looked like it was eating something. My buddy saw it, too, and said it looked like a big wolf. When we turned around to get a better look and the headlights shined on it, this thing stood up on two legs and took a couple of steps toward the car. I almost crapped myself. My mind was trying to wrap around what I was seeing and I'm not going to lie, I felt a fear that was real. My buddy whispered "Sasquatch, dude! I told you so!" It did sort of look like a bigfoot because it was big and covered in fur like you would expect, but this thing had the head of a wolf! The thing I remember most is that it had really long arms and what looked like human hands. So this thing stood there about 20 feet away for maybe 30 seconds, gave a low growl, and made snort of a grimace, and ran off toward the woods. It ran on two legs at first and then dropped down to all fours and really took off. It literally looked like a guy in a fur suit with a wolf head, but I don't think any human can run on all fours with that kind of natural movement. If it was somebody in a suit, he was pumped like Mr. Universe and sort of deformed. This happened in 2023 toward the end of August. *This account was submitted to the author of this article by a Newsbreak follower.

    The Canyon Creature

Me and my wife were camping near Cloudland Canyon last summer, off the trail, in the middle of nowhere. We had our big Lab/Husky mix, and I've never seen him afraid of anything. On the first two nights, he acted uneasy and restless all night. We kept getting a slight whiff of skunk spray, so we chalked it up to that. On our third night of camping, there was a really bright full moon. It was bright enough that we didn't even need a flashlight in the clearing where we had our tent. About 2 or 3 in the morning, both of us woke up to a horrible smell. It was like a mix of skunk and dog sh*t. In fact, I checked the tent real quick to make sure our dog hadn't done his job in there. That's when I noticed he was up under our covers hiding. I had never seen him do that! About that time, my wife told me to listen because she heard something outside the tent. I grabbed my glock. That's when this thing, whatever it was, got between our tent and the moon just right where it cast a dim shadow on our tent. We both saw the silhouette of this thing. At one point it turned sideways and you could see what looked like either a muzzle or some kind of mask sticking out from its face. It stood there for what felt like forever (but was probably only a few seconds) before we could hear it walking away. I jumped as fast as I could out of the tent to try to catch whoever or whatever this was in our camp in the middle of the night. I guess it heard me. It stopped just short of the end of the clearing and turned around. Now, this whole time, mind you, I'm still trying to tell myself that this was some weirdo in a costume or a mask. But I swear, what I saw was no mask, no costume, and couldn't have been human. This thing had to be 8 feet tall, built like a linebacker, and looked dark - like it was covered in hair. No clothing that I could see. The way it showed its teeth to me was no mask and its eyes had some kind of weird glow. Not light reflection, but an actual glow. That's when I felt a wave of absolute fear come over me. It's weird, but it's like this thing was projecting the fear into my core. After what felt like forever, it turned and walked away into the woods. Pretty soon, the worst of the fear left and the bad smell faded. I didn't take any chances, though. I started a fire and kept watch outside the tent until dawn and that's when we packed up and hightailed it out of there. You know, I used to make fun of people who said they saw bigfoot or weird stuff like this but not anymore. I know what I saw and hope I never do again. This happened in 2023. *This account was submitted to the author of this article by a Newsbreak follower.

    Cabin in the Woods

A man and his wife were vacationing in a two-story cabin they had rented in northwest Georgia. The cabin was in an extremely remote area, far from any towns or other houses. In the middle of the night, something startled them both wide awake. That's when they noticed a feeling of intense dread. As they crept downstairs to investigate, they saw something they would never forget. Staring at them through a downstairs window was a creature that looked like a wolf but stood on two legs like a man. They went on to describe the beast: "The head was a human-canine cross with very sparse hair. It did not have a tail." They also said the creature was snarling and growling at them, which they could hear inside the house.*The full version of this encounter was originally published on the website Phantoms and Monsters: Pulse of the Paranormal. No date for the sighting was given.

    Cohutta Creature

This encounter was shared by a surveyor who was working in Gilmer County, approximately 12 miles south of the Cohutta Wilderness. Instead of working with a partner or team that day, he was using robotic equipment, which allowed him to work alone. He was in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by rugged forestland on steep mountain slopes. He had just used a machete to cut a 5-foot-wide clearing along the property line and was about to head back to get his equipment from the truck. As he turned around, facing the trail that he had just cut, some movement ahead caught his attention. At first, he thought a large person wearing a hat and a shaggy fur coat was walking through the brush. As it dawned on him that it was far too hot for anyone to be wearing a fur coat, that's when the creature stepped into the middle of the clearing, and the surveyor got a better look. Before him stood an enormous creature that he estimated was 7 to 8 feet tall. What he thought was a hat was actually a pair of pointed ears, and the fur coat was the hair that covered the creature's body. He described the head of the creature as resembling a German Shepherd with a long snout. The creature stared at him for a few seconds, then turned and walked away. This happened in 2018. *The full account of this sighting was originally posted to reddit.com

    Two Sightings in Southeast Georgia

According to a 2023 article, paranormal investigator Aubrey Bowen was in southeast Georgia scouting for local ghost stories. She was looking in particular for stories centered around Orange Hall in St. Marys of Camden County. While interviewing locals, she heard several strange stories about "upright canines" in the area. One resident recounted his sighting that occurred when he was around 12 years old in 1998. As he was walking home late one summer evening, he saw what he thought was a wild dog eating something in the edge of the woods. He suddenly found himself paralyzed with fear as the creature stood up on two legs like a human and turned around to look at him. The next thing he knew, he was home on his couch with no memory of how he got there. The second sighting took place in 2015 in the middle of the day. Bowen quoted the eyewitness in the article:

"We were going towards Folkston, it was four of us in a car,” she said. “And right in the middle before you get into the swamp, right in the middle of the road was this ... I thought it was a wolf in the daylight. And I thought, what the heck? And I looked and when I did it caught my eye. It had yellow eyes and it stood up. It stood up. It was seven to eight feet tall. Now I ain't the only one that saw this. And it stood up and it followed us with its eyes. But its legs were backwards.”

*The complete account of these sightings as told to Audrey Bowen can be found in an article by Tobias and Emily Wayland that was published to the Singular Fortean Society website in July, 2023.

    Fort Stewart: Foraging Upright Canines

This story was reported by the grandson of a WWII veteran named John who was stationed at Fort Stewart after enlisting for WWII. In 1941, Fort Stewart was a massive army base that housed close to 40,000 enlisted men. The entire base covered 280,000 acres - much of which was rugged, forested land. The trash from the camp was taken to an area north of the barricks where a huge ravine served as a dump. One morning, when John was on trash duty, he and several other soldiers noticed what looked like a huge dog foraging for food at the edge of the ravine. The dog looked so enormous that John wondered if it could be a wolf. In the instant he had that thought, the massive canine stood up on two legs as if it were human and glared back at the soldiers. The creature then dropped back down on all fours and ran off into the woods. John told his grandson that during his service in WWII, he met several other soldiers who had been stationed at Fort Stewart and had seen these strange-looking dogs. Many others had also seen them walk on two legs like a human. There were rumors that several soldiers had been attacked by these creatures on the base, but John could never confirm those stories. *The full account of this sighting was published originally to the website Phantoms and Monsters: Pulse of the Paranormal.

I discovered dogman stories a few months ago, and fell down the rabbit hole. Some of the accounts are too believable not to be made up, based on the emotions of the people relating their encounters. I just know that I'm never going into the deep woods or a national park anytime in the future. Dogman Encounters Radio & Dogman Paranormal Research by Jeff Nadolny are two good resources, but I have to add that Nadolny repeats episodes too much.
