Every four years, the world comes together in a celebration of sportsmanship and national pride at the Olympics. This summer, the prestigious event is set to grace the magnificent city of Paris, France. Athletes from every corner of the globe have been competing fiercely, pushing their limits to earn their place among the elite in their respective sports and proudly represent their nations.

Paris, France, is set to provide the world with the biggest stage in sports competition. The Olympics have been around for centuries. The path of the Olympic flame always begins its route at the birthplace of the Olympics: Greece. Both places are rich in history. It seems only right to have the Olympics hosted by the beautiful city of Paris, the city of Love.

The Olympics are set to begin on July 24 and run through the beginning of August. Multiple countries are set to compete for the glory of the gold medal. How many gold medals will each country tally up by the end of this magnificent competition? NBC.com will more than likely continue keeping a tally of all medal counts throughout the competition.

What Types of Sports Will Athletes Compete In?

From artistic gymnastics to swimming and track, there are so many different sports that we see athletes involved in. Many athletes from the United States are known around the world for their participation in their respective sports. Gymnastics is one that many spectators follow almost religiously. Simone Biles has become a household name whenever gymnastics is mentioned, the same way Michael Phelps was whenever men's swimming was mentioned. Both athletes are described as the 'GOAT' (greatest of all time) in their respective sports.

This year, the Paris Summer Olympics will host 32 individual/team sports. Twenty-eight sports categories will return from the previous Olympics, and four new sports will be introduced. One of those new sports is called 'Breaking,' which is, in a sense, break dancing.

The time and preparation it takes just one of these many athletes is indescribable. So much time, effort, practice, and dedication goes into perfecting a routine or skill. Some of these events are team-centric, like soccer or basketball. Each practice goes towards the goal of bringing home a medal for your country, whether it be gold, silver, or bronze. Being an Olympic champion brings pride, joy, and honor to your country.

    Choosing a Host City

How does the International Olympic Committee choose a city to host the next Olympic games? There is a list of certain criteria that a country hoping to be the next host city must consider. This list includes, but is not limited to, the following important factors: geography, social factors, environmental factors, and human development. Numerous countries put forth a bid to hopefully have their name drawn. This bid includes the potential host country stating how they will use the temporary and existing venues.

Overall, the IOC casts its votes on a secret ballot to name the next host city for the Summer and Winter Olympics. This also includes the ParaOlympics for both summer and winter. The next city to host the Summer Olympics in 2028 will be Los Angeles, California, United States. After this year's summer games, the world will have to wait two years for the 2026 Winter Olympics, which is to be hosted by Italy. Specially Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo with other events taking place throughout other Italian cities. The selection of the next Olympic host city is chosen every seven to eleven years.

    Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The opening ceremonies of every Olympics held is comprised of thousands of organizers. Comprising the opening and closing Olympic ceremonies is no small feat. There are so many different components that go into the grand production of these ceremonies. The host city will include components of their culture while also paying homage to the history of the Olympics. The closing ceremonies are done in very much the same fashion as the opening ceremonies.

This year, the opening ceremonies incorporated French Culture and homage to the beginning of the Olympics, taking note that the Ancient Greeks believed in numerous deities. These opening ceremonies came under vast scrunity for one of many reasons. Reasons too long to list here in this article.
