Local history to be displayed during Manistee National Forest Festival
MANISTEE — When people think of the Manistee National Forest Festival, the first things coming to mind are parades, fireworks, carnivals and other fun events. What many tend to overlook is the reason the festival first originated nearly 90 years ago: To celebrate Manistee’s rich history with the forest and lumber industry. It’s why the festival holds several events every year to focus on the history of Manistee.

Frankfort raises awareness for Lighthouse Restoration Project
FRANKFORT — The City of Frankfort’s Lighthouse is a staple to their Maritime History. Now the Lighthouse Restoration Project is raising awareness to help raise the funds they need to fulfill this project. The lighthouse was first built in 1912, making it over 112 years old. During 1932, the second portion of the lighthouse was built where it is now. They then moved the first portion to the top making it what it is today. Interlochen man drowns in the Manistee River while fishing
MANISTEE COUNTY — A man died after falling into the water without a lifejacket, the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies were called to the scene on the Manistee River, downstream from Hodenpyl Dam, around 6 p.m. Tuesday. They said Todd Marshall of Interlochen fell in while fishing and went under. The Sheriff’s Office, Dickson Township Fire Department, DNR officers and a drone from the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Department of Public Safety all aided in the search. Marshall was eventually found in the water by the DNR boat. Life-saving measures were attempted, but deputies said the man couldn’t be saved.

U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten today announced that Andrew Blair Howard, 63, of Sparta and Frankfort, Michigan, was sentenced to 60 months’ probation and ordered to pay $22,472.22 in total restitution to the National Park Service and U.S. Coast Guard, along with $3,947.71 in costs related to the court proceedings.

Frankfort musician’s legacy lives on at library’s Harmony Garden
FRANKFORT — The Benzie Shores District Library made the decision to dedicate their Harmony Garden to Marilyn Hagen. Hagen was an accomplished pianist and organist who served as the Frankfort Methodist Church’s music director for 14 years. Her husband, Dr. George Hagen, donated money to the library, requesting it to be used for a music-themed project. The Harmony Garden features colorful interactive bells to encourage children to visit. “I hope they hear peace and harmony. The garden itself and the library is all on property that was left to the city for civic purposes, so everything here is really this gift to the community. And the bells are no different,” said Stacy Pasche, library director.
