$241K 6th Street project in Manistee underway near Kennedy Elementary
MANISTEE — Work on Sixth Street in front of the Kennedy Elementary School building in Manistee is underway. Manistee City Council voted unanimously March 19 to award a contract to Rieth-Riley Construction in the amount of $241,095 to repave and narrow a portion of Sixth Street between Maple and Robinson streets.

West Michigan angler sentenced for diverting national park river by hand
A West Michigan fisherman was sentenced Tuesday to probation after being convicted of diverting a national park river to ease boat access to Lake Michigan. Andrew Blair Howard, 63, of Sparta and Frankfort, Michigan, was sentenced to 60 months probation and ordered to pay nearly $22,500 in total restitution to the National Park Service (NPS) and United States Coast Guard, along with nearly $4,000 in costs related to the court proceedings, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten announced Wednesday.

MANISTEE COUNTY — The Manistee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a drowning that occurred on the Manistee River just downstream from Hodenpyl Dam on Tuesday. Todd Marshall, 53, of Interlochen, was fishing when he fell into the water and began to struggle before going under, according to a witness at the scene.
