ARCHER CITY ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Archer City is firing up the grills this weekend for the 7th annual BBQ benefit, which will support the volunteer fire department this Sunday at Archer City ISD.

3rd annual Tacos y Tortas El Pelon back-to-school bash coming up

Benefit Volunteer Mandy Kinnaman says it’s special for her to be able to do something like this because in 2020, her house burned, and the Archer City VFD worked all night trying to save her home. She says it’s a way for her and the community to show appreciation for all the fire department does.

As the fundraiser approaches , the anticipation is so strong that it can be cut with a knife.

Kinnaman said all the good things, like brisket, potato salad, and baked beans, would be served, and it would just be a great time for the community to come together for a good cause.

That cause was started seven years ago by a man named Allen Davis.

“It started in 2018. We had a lot of wildfires all around the area, and there was one particularly bad one, which was actually raining ash in the town of Archer itself. And a friend of ours, Alan Davis, who is now deceased, he called and asked if we would be interested in helping him put together a benefit,” Kinnaman said. “And in two weeks’ time, we got it together and raised a significant amount of money, and within the next year, he passed away from a heart attack.”

Though Davis is no longer with them, this does not stop them from continuing the initiative to help the fire department.

“It’s just to help them raise money to pay for equipment, trucks, tires, maintenance, all those sorts of things. You know, because when they have brushfires, they drive out over open land that’s rough-and-tumble and ruin tires, engines, and things like that. So, it’s just to help them maintain the fire department,” Kinnaman said.

With the community’s help, this event promises to be a day filled with delicious food and community spirit.

The benefit will be at the Archer City Elementary School on Sunday, July 28, starting at 11 a.m.
