Beryl, the first major hurricane of the year, has finally dissipated, but it’s still casting a long shadow in Texas. As of last Tuesday afternoon, more than a week after the storm made landfall in the state, more than 100,000 electricity customers still didn’t have power — the vast majority of them in the Houston metropolitan area. Texas crash leaves one dead, another seriously injured
PECOS, Texas — A head-on collision on FM 1053 near mile marker 384 resulted in one death and one serious injury Saturday morning. The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the crash involved a 2015 Ford F-150 and a 2024 GMC Sierra. Donnavin Brown, a 21-year-old from Odessa, Texas, was driving the Ford F-150 southbound when his vehicle veered into the northbound lane. Nicholas Calloway, a 25-year-old from Houston, Texas, was driving the GMC Sierra and attempted to avoid the collision by moving into the southbound lane. However, Brown's vehicle returned to the southbound lane, striking Calloway's vehicle head-on. Calloway was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Braden. Brown sustained serious injuries and was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital.

HOUSTON — The Houston Health Department is giving away some free portable air conditioners to seniors, people with disabilities and caregivers of disabled children. Harris County residents who are 60 and older or who have a disability are eligible to apply by calling the Harris County Area Agency on Aging at 832-393-4301.
