Arizona will get more heat before the rain showers and thunderstorms this week

    2024-06-10

According to the Arizona Weatherman, another heatwave will occur Tuesday through Thursday, 10-13 Jun 2024. Then, a cut-off low will eject over the state late Thursday into the evening through Friday, 14 Jun 2024. This low has the potential to drop some rain and isolated thunderstorms across the state.

The heatwave, is a result of longwave ridging over the state and a cut-off low developing to the southwest of Arizona in the upper levels, is set to make its presence felt. This pattern will produce high temperatures that max out on Thursday. Be prepared for near-to-equivalent record high temperatures throughout the state, including a high temperature of 113 F for Phoenix on Thursday, which will be within one degree of the climatological high of 114 F. For Tucson, expect 111 F and a Flagstaff high of 90 F.

From Thursday late afternoon through Friday, expect that cut-off low to move over the state and bring rain showers and thunderstorms, predominantly to the northern section of the state. The showers will move from the west toward the eastern part of Arizona going into Friday. There appears to be a better chance of rain actually hitting the ground than last week, but it is still not likely to get a whole lot of precipitation accumulation on the ground. There is also the potential for isolated thunderstorms with this system, but severe thunderstorms are less likely. However, convective gusty winds of 35-50 mph are a possibility.

Friday verification: A few isolated thunderstorms over northern Coconino and Navajo Counties this morning. Looking like the Upper-low is ejecting out today and expect minimal precip in the next several hours.

Thursday verification. The high temperatures were in the last 24 hours for these locations. I took the highest from the METARS. Phoenix, I forecasted 113 F; they got 111 F. Tucson forecasted 111 F; they got 107 F, a little too high for that one. Flagstaff forecasted 90 F, and they got 88 F. It's Pretty close there. It was a little on the high side, but they did get more clouds statewide today, and rain showers started coming in in the late afternoon for Grand Canyon, north of Winslow, and other areas. I did not see any Tstms. More to come into this evening and Friday. There are a lot of clouds and VIRGA throughout the state as well.
