Barbara Hallick Yeomans made her remarks during public comment period of the City Council meeting. She said her son grapples with substance abuse and mental illness and repeatedly has been harassed by police. She said her son also suffered verbal abuse by a guard in the Denver County Jail. Yeomans said she heard the guard harassing her son over the phone.

Jeff Landry of Louisiana signed into law a new bill that requires all public Louisiana school and university classrooms to display a poster-sized printout of the Bible’s Ten Commandments. The law violates existing legal precedents regarding the First Amendment and is expected to be challenged in the Supreme Court, although there is speculation that today’s conservative Supreme Court will overturn that precedent and allow the new law to stand.

Friedman died “peacefully at his home in his sleep” early Thursday morning at Echo Hill Ranch in Medina, Texas, according to a Facebook post from his friend, Kent Perkins. Friedman had Parkinson’s disease, The Texas Tribune reports.
