Top Gun: Maverick is bringing back Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer's Iceman, but here are all the stars from 1986's Top Gun who aren't returning. Tom Cruise returns to star in Top Gun: Maverick in 2020, but most of the original Top Gun cast won't be back - here is every character not returning. After over 30 years, audiences around the world were just a few months away from feeling the need for speed again. Top Gun 2 was scheduled to hit theaters in July 2020, but the long-awaited sequel was one of several movies that got delayed due to coronavirus. Now scheduled to arrive in cinemas in December 2020, Top Gun: Maverick will finally bring fans of the 1986 original film back to the familiar world of air combat. The sequel is helmed by Joseph Kosinski and debuted multiple promising trailers before its delay. Tom Cruise's return as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell and the visceral and practical flight sequences are some of the biggest selling points for Top Gun 2. A batch of newcomers to the franchise surround Cruise, including Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Thomasin McKenzie, Ed Harris, Glen Powell, and Manny Jacinto - but some familiar faces are also returning. Top Gun: Maverick 's biggest returning character fans will immediately recognize is Val Kilmer as Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky. There are a variety of theories about the exact role he will play in the sequel, but it is confirmed that Iceman will be part of the story in some fashion. Meanwhile, Miles Teller joined Top Gun: Maverick 's cast to play Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw, the son of Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw. Rooster was just a baby during the events of the first Top Gun, but now he'll be part of a new generation of pilots. Even though Goose's son and Iceman are joining Maverick in Top Gun 2, that is where the list of characters returning from the original film ends. This means that there are several characters from Top Gun that won't be making an appearance - or at least have not been revealed to do so. Here is every character who will not return in Top Gun: Maverick. Charlotte Blackwood Kelly McGillis is not returning as Charlotte Blackwood in Top Gun: Maverick. As the female lead of the original film, Charlie played a significant role in the movie and Maverick's life. She struck a romance with the hotshot pilot shortly after another stint of contract work with the TOPGUN program. Even though Top Gun concluded with Charlotte and Maverick's relationship in a good place, their love didn't last as Connelly plays Maverick's new love interest. McGillis has confirmed she wasn't asked to return for the sequel either. Mike 'Viper' Metcalf Tom Skerritt is not confirmed to return as Mike 'Viper' Metcalf in Top Gun 2. Metcalf has a history with Maverick's family as he flew alongside Duke Pitchell during the Vietnam War. After his time as a pilot, Metcalf became an instructor at TOPGUN. He has a close relationship with Maverick as a result. After the TOPGUN graduation ceremony, Metcalf offers to fly with Maverick in the film's final sequence if he did not receive a Radar Intercept Officer (RIO). Skerritt has teased that a return in Top Gun: Maverick is possible, but so far, that hasn't proven to be true. Rick 'Jester' Heatherly Michael Ironside will not return in Top Gun: Maverick as Rick 'Jester' Heatherly. Jester is a former pilot for the US Navy and served as another instructor at TOPGUN during the events of the first movie. He is still alive at the end of the film, but it appears he has moved on from the program by the time Top Gun 2 rolls around. Ironside confirmed in an interview he will not appear due to an ongoing feud with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Some of the new cast members for the film have positions of power at TOPGUN now, but maybe a reference to Jester will still be made. Bill 'Cougar' Cortell Maverick's original wingman is not expected to return in Top Gun: Maverick. Portrayed by John Stockwell, Bill 'Cougar' Cortell was a fellow pilot in Top Gun who had a panic attack during a flight with Maverick. Although Pete attempted to coach Bill through the moment, the experience was too much for him to handle. He resigned from the Navy after the incident despite him being part of the best flight duo in the squadron and on his way to being accepted into TOPGUN. Since he left the piloting world behind several decades ago, Bill's absence from Top Gun: Maverick won't be too surprising. Sam 'Merlin' Wells Top Gun: Maverick is not scheduled to include the return of Tim Robbins as Sam 'Merlin' Wells. He was Cougar's RIO prior to him resigning and joined up with Maverick for the film's final sequence. Merlin was assigned to be Maverick's RIO after he graduated from TOPGUN. Together, Merlin and Maverick took down three of the six MIG-28s and proved to be a formidable pairing. There hasn't been any sign that Robbins is involved with the sequel, which would mean Merlin and Maverick won't be flying together again. Carole Bradshaw Meg Ryan is not believed to be returning as Carole Bradshaw in Top Gun: Maverick. Right before she became a rom-com star, Ryan appeared in the original Top Gun as Goose's wife and the mother of Rooster. With her son following in his father's footsteps as a pilot, it is surprising Carole won't make an appearance of some magnitude. However, since Meg Ryan has taken a step back from acting, this could be why she won't appear in Top Gun 2. Ron 'Slider' Kerner Top Gun: Maverick will feature the return of Iceman, but his partner Ron 'Slider' Kerner is not expected to appear. Slider served as Iceman's RIO in Top Gun, with Rick Rossovich bringing his cocky persona to the screen. He remained Iceman's flight partner through the film, but Rossovich has not been linked to reprising the role in the sequel. So, if Iceman is still flying in Top Gun 2, he'll have to do so without Slider. Rick 'Hollywood' Neven Whip Hubley will not return as Rick 'Hollywood' Neven in Top Gun: Maverick. Neven was a fellow graduate of the TOPGUN program and flew alongside Maverick in the final air fight. His F-14 was shot down during the engagement, but he did not die. Neven was rescued by helicopter and greeted Maverick and other pilots who returned safely at the end. Leonard 'Wolfman' Wolfe Without Hollywood, the return of Barry Tubb as Leonard 'Wolfman' Wolfe in Top Gun: Maverick is also unexpected. Wolfe was Hollywood's RIO during Top Gun, resulting in him also being shot down and rescued in the third act. There is no sign that Tubb is involved with the sequel, so Wolfman and Hollywood may have hung up their wings together. Charles 'Chipper' Piper Adrian Pasdar is not scheduled to return as Charles 'Chipper' Piper in Top Gun: Maverick. Chipper was one of Maverick's fellow pilots at the TOPGUN program, but he did not get a chance to fly in the final air fight. Even though Pasdar is still a busy actor, there have been no reports that he will reprise his Top Gun role in the sequel. Marcus 'Sundown' Williams Clarence Gilyard Jr. 's Marcus 'Sundown' Williams is also not expected to return in Top Gun: Maverick. Although he primarily was the RIO for Chipper in Top Gun, he was briefly assigned to work with Maverick in an attempt to replace Goose. The partnership did not last as Maverick was still grieving the death of his friend. The anticipated follow-up was scheduled to debut June 24 and will now release Dec. 23, 2020. As part of the release shake-up, Paramount has also moved “A Quiet Place Part II” — which the studio postponed last month — to Sept. 4, 2020. “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, ” an animated adventure based on the absorbent underwater fry cook, was originally slated to hit theaters on May 22 and will now bow July 31, 2020. Meanwhile sci-fi fantasy film “The Tomorrow War, ” previously scheduled for Dec. 25, 2020, is now undated. Those films join a growing list of tentpoles that were pulled from release because of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent closure of multiplexes.
