Arlington County officials are trumpeting a recent accolade that came to Alcova Heights Park.

The county’s Department of Parks and Recreation won the “Best New Renovation/Addition” award at the 2024 Virginia Parks and Recreation Society (VRPS) conference.

“This award reflects our commitment to creating sustainable, accessible and enjoyable public spaces that meet the evolving needs of our community,” said Jane Rudolph, the county’s director of Parks and Recreation, in a county press release .

As part of the project, the 13-acre park was updated to focus on improved pedestrian circulation, community safety and environmental preservation, county officials said. It remains home to picnic shelters, a playground, a basketball court and walking paths.

As part of ongoing county-government reforestation and stormwater-management efforts, the park now has 250 new trees and an additional 1,200 shrubs, county officials said.

The annual VRPS meeting and awards ceremony was held in Norfolk.
