Demolition has begun on the former Harris Teeter at 600 N. Glebe Road in Ballston.

The grocery store that relocated across the street this spring is now in the process of getting converted into temporary surface parking, Mary Senn, vice president of Southeastern Development Associates , confirmed.

This kicks off the second phase of development for the UrbA apartment complex , which is expected to bring over 700 new apartments to Ballston.

While the first phase introduced 310 units above the Harris Teeter’s new location at 624 N. Glebe Road, the second phase will bring a 0.6-acre public park and a 197-unit apartment building. It will also include permanent ground-floor parking for the grocery store.

Phase 2 construction is expected to wrap up in 2027, Senn said.

The 600 N. Glebe Road site will meet its ultimate fate in the third phase of construction. That’s when the temporary parking lot is set to become a 227-unit residential building with retail on the ground floor and two levels of below-grade parking.

“Amenities will serve all three phases of the UrbA apartments and will include expansive outdoor amenities such as a resort style pool, an outdoor kitchen and living area, outdoor fitness, a bocce court, and a dog park,” Senn said. “Indoor amenities include a club room, a golf simulator, a coworking lounge, a dog spa, a bike room with a bike repair station, and package lockers.”
