Hanson Nature Center Grand Opening, July 13
The Winnebago County Conservation Board and the Friends of Winnebago County Conservation have scheduled a Grand Opening for the new Hanson Nature Center. It will be held Saturday, July 13, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Center, located at 41600 Hwy. 69, Leland. The event will also serve as a retirement party for Winnebago County Conservation Board Director Robert Schwartz, who will be retiring on July 31.
Immigrant supporters march in IC to protest new law
About 100 people marched through Iowa City Monday night to demonstrate against government support of Iowa’s new “illegal reentry” law. Reverend Guillermo Trevino of West Liberty, born in Texas to two Mexican immigrant parents, told the Press Citizen at the rally “If the law is enacted, it would separate families and put children at risk of losing the emotional and financial support they need to survive.”

» More than 100 Tractors Ride in Memory of Mechanic
KEOTA – The 4th Annual Travis Greiner Memorial Ride began in Keota on June 29. More than 100 tractors left Keota, traveling a 54 mile route visiting Talleyrand, Washington County Fair Grounds and Brenneman Pork before returning to Keota. The annual ride is held in memory of Travis Greiner, a well respected local mechanic and farmer who passed away in 2020.
Crawfordsville Fun Days Return This Week
An annual event for the last decade, Crawfordsville Fun Days returns to southeast Iowa Friday, July 5 and Saturday, July 6. Sponsored by the Crawfordsville Community Club, day one of the celebration is the perfect chance for guests to eat, socialize, and compete. Vice President of the Club Karen Dennler explains, “Friday night is our bags tournament. [It’s] two person, double elimination. We also have El Gringo Loco Food Truck there and Crawfordsville is a tight community so people come out just to eat and hang out, see their neighbors, play bags, just have a good time.” Both of Friday’s events begin at 6 p.m.

As big days go, July 4th is one of the big dogs. It's America's birthday. July 4th is not just a big day for America. It's also part of Iowa history. We learned from Iowa PBS that early in its journey, the U.S. Congress set up a roadmap for western lands to become states, remembering how the American colonists weren't exactly fans of British rule (cue the Revolutionary fireworks). One of their star acts was the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. It gave a how-to guide for places like Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin to join the statehood club.

An eye doctor who serves northeast Iowa dreads being on call during the Fourth of July, as she says there’s always a case of someone being blinded by fireworks. Dr. Anna Kitzmann, an ophthalmologist with Gundersen Health in Decorah, says fireworks can cause devastating injuries to the hands, face and especially to the eyes.
