Kroger & Albertsons reveal locations of 26 stores in North Texas it would sell in merger

Kroger and Albertsons have released a list of North Texas grocery stores it would sell if their merger is approved, including multiple locations in Arlington and elsewhere in Tarrant County.

The grocery giants announced plans in fall 2022 for Kroger to acquire Albertsons for $24.6 billion . The proposal was initially met with some public opposition and is still pending approval from federal regulators.

With a total of 5,000 stores, a Kroger-Albertsons merger would position the chain competitively against the country’s largest grocers, Walmart, Amazon and Costco . Kroger and Albertsons each operate a family of other grocery banners, including Tom Thumb, Ralphs, Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Safeway and Vons.

If regulators approve the merger, Kroger and Albertsons would sell hundreds of stores to New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers, including 28 locations in Texas. The Federal Trade Commission has raised red flags about the proposed deal, saying it could diminish competition, raise consumer prices and lower wages.

C&S is a grocery supplier to more than 7,500 independent supermarkets and chain stores. It has promised to honor collective bargaining agreements and benefits for employees of the stores it purchases.

Ohio-based Kroger has more than 200 stores in Texas, clustered in the Metroplex and the Houston metro. Kroger employs more than 30,000 workers in the state. Idaho-based Albertsons has more than 40 stores in Texas, as well as 65 Tom Thumbs.
