This story was reported by WHRO News. A Norfolk nonprofit created Virginia’s first statewide directory of businesses accepting and welcoming of the LGBTQ+ community. Corey Mohr, of the LGBT Life Center, said the No. 1 question the center receives is where to find LGBTQ+-friendly services. A common request they get is recommendations for medical providers and related services — but the need for welcoming spaces goes far beyond the doctor’s office.
Alumni Spotlight: Matt Kaminer ’18, ’22L
Matt Kaminer ‘18, ‘22L is from Hewlett, NY. He received his undergraduate degree in journalism from Washington and Lee University, where he captained the varsity wrestling team. Before law school, Matt worked as a paralegal at Nussbaum Law Group, a boutique plaintiffs’ antitrust litigation firm in New York City. At W&L Law, Matt served as Lead Online Editor for the Law Review, a Burks Scholar with the Legal Writing Program, and a Kirgis Fellow. He was also active in Moot Court, winning the school-wide John W. Davis Appellate Advocacy Competition and finishing as runner-up in the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition. After graduation, Matt served as a law clerk to Judge Elizabeth Dillon of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia. Currently, Matt is clerking for Judge Julio Fuentes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, based in Newark, NJ. Following his clerkships, Matt will join the New York office of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP as a litigation associate.

In May, Virginia Sportsbooks stunned the public with $60 million in revenue
For May 2024, the Virginia Lottery reported nearly $60 million in gross sports betting revenue. Sportsbook operators had an 11.9% hold on the market. Additionally, revenue was up 24.6% compared to May 2023. That was slightly less than the 25.2% increase in the handle to $505.6 million. Their $60 million in gross sports betting revenue was the fifth-highest total in 41 months of legal wagering in Virginia. Six of the eight highest monthly revenue totals have come in the last nine months. Sportsbooks in Virginia have attained a double-digit hold 21 times, it’s happened 12 times in the last 15 months.
