55 Fiction: The world’s shortest stories, with a twist
A hallmark of the 55 Fiction stories submitted to our annual short story contest is the “surprise” at the end that ties the preceding sentences together. They show up in stories about murders, love, food, animals, cars—really, you can craft a tiny twist into any tall tale. We’re here to publish the best ones annually. We received hundreds and hundreds of entries from all over the world: 55 words at a time with up to seven words for a headline. Our judges combed through them all, and here are the final 23 for 2024’s contest.

San Luis Obispo Museum of Art presenting new mural by MOMO
—The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (SLOMA) is pleased to announce a new mural for 2024 to be painted by American mural artist MOMO. The projects begins July 22 and is expected to be completed by August 16. This new mural will replace the beloved SLO(W) Rainbow by California artist Leah Rosenberg.

PCPA Returns to Santa Maria and Solvang for a Jam-Packed 61st Season
The Pacific Conservatory Theatre’s (PCPA) 61st season will showcase a variety of performances ranging from traditional musicals to renditions of Disney classics to Shakespeare and more. Starting in November, PCPA will be entertaining audiences in theaters in Santa Maria and Solvang. This season is merely a continuation of PCPA’s long-established tradition of featuring their talented trainees, putting the next generation of theater professionals on display. With former members like Robin Williams, Kathy Bates, Zac Efron, and more, this year’s company is sure to carry on the PCPA legacy and stun spectators with their craft.
Business Spotlight: Opera San Luis Obispo
What began as a small project is now becoming first opera company to produce a Disney musical at grand scale. In 1985, Opera San Luis Obispo (OSLO) began as a fun project started by soprano Dr. Jill Anderson and her friends to provide an outlet for performing opera music. Leading the company until 2008, Anderson, now the co-artistic director of Canzona Women’s Chorus, and her friends started with informal recitals at Linneas’ Cafe in SLO, developing more than 35 operas in 23 years.
