Tom Sawyer Jr. visited Arvada Fire Station No. 1 on Tuesday after he was released from the hospital. The 13-year-old spent several weeks hospitalized after the crash but came back with his mom and sister to thank several of the first responders who were first at the scene.
“We are very thankful for the visit,” the Arvada Police Department posted on Facebook . “As first responders, we often do not see the positive side of our work. Thank you to Tom and his family, for taking the time out of a busy summer to share your story.”
The Arvada Fire Department also celebrated the 13-year-old survivor’s visit to their station.
“We were happy to be a part of this reunion and our thoughts and support will continue to be with Tom!” the Arvada Fire Department said on Facebook . “Station 1 B Shift told Tom that he is welcome to visit the fire station any time. Thanks to Arvada Police Department, Colorado for their support on this incident and for capturing this moment.”
The plane crashed on June 7 in the front yard of an Arvavda home at about 9:30 a.m. The aircraft burst into flames after crashing, injuring all four passengers on board. One passenger’s injuries resulted in her death.
Witnesses of the crash helped pull the victims from the wreckage. The plane crashed 15 minutes after taking off from the Centennial Airport south of Denver.
On June 26, the National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report on the crash, which found no pre-impact issues with the plane. A more in-depth investigation is ongoing, but the plane’s structure was mostly “ consumed by postimpact fire ,” according to the report.
