ASBURY PARK, NJ – T he Salvation Army Asbury Park Corps is hosting a unique and exciting dance summer camp from July 16-19. Themed "Dancing Through the Decades," the camp will introduce dozens of children to a variety of dance styles, including jazz, hip hop, disco, and more, offering a fun and enriching experience.

The Salvation Army's network of free summer camps aims to provide children from all backgrounds, regardless of family income, with a safe and enjoyable summer experience. These camps offer outdoor recreation, educational activities, and hands-on projects, allowing kids to learn new skills, make friends, and create lasting memories.

Olivia Renkel, the arts and special events director for the Salvation Army in New Jersey, shared her enthusiasm for the program, "This week, we're here with NJ Arts on Tour, a program that started three years ago. We spend five weeks every summer traveling to different Salvation Army locations to run arts-themed day camps or vacation Bible schools. The kids always have an end-of-the-week performance for their friends and family. Our goal is to bring arts, specifically dance this week, into communities at no cost to the kids. They get to learn and experience something new, which is why we do what we do."

Renkel also highlighted a partnership with Dancers Embrace, a mother-daughter duo committed to providing free dance instruction to underprivileged communities. "They share our mission to offer dance instruction at no cost, ensuring that kids receive the same quality instruction as those at dance studios," Renkel added.

Major Cat Lyle, the corps officer at Asbury Park, emphasized the importance of such programs, "In the fall, we run a music and arts academy on Thursdays, and some of our kids have shown interest in dance. We've wanted to expand that part of our program, and Olivia's efforts have allowed us to offer professional dance instruction for free. This initiative not only connects with our fall programs but also helps secure quality teachers to teach dance. Learning dance, music, or any art form is a powerful character-building tool, especially for children who might not otherwise have access to these resources. We aim to provide these opportunities to develop their talents."

Lyle praised the collaborative effort, stating, "Olivia and our partners are doing a spectacular job creating a fun and educational experience for our kids."
