ASBURY PARK, NJ - Democratic Senator Bob Menendez is set to resign next month after being found guilty in a federal bribery trial. The resignation is slated for August 20.

With Menendez's imminent departure, attention is turning to who will fill his Senate seat. Among the top contenders is Christian Fuscarino, Executive Director of Garden State Equality (GSE) , based in Asbury Park. Fuscarino would make history as the first openly gay male U.S. senator, adding a significant milestone to his candidacy.

Fuscarino has been a vocal supporter of Governor Phil Murphy, who holds the authority to appoint Menendez's successor. "I have to admit when I started my day by setting up folding chairs and tables for a work event, I didn't think I would be getting text messages and calls about potentially making national history as the first openly gay male in the U.S. Senate because of a Newsweek article," Fuscarino remarked.

In a statement earlier this week, Fuscarino expressed his confidence in Governor Murphy's ability to choose the most qualified individual for the role. "This decision rests entirely with Governor Murphy," he concluded. Fuscarino's long-standing support for Murphy and his advocacy for inclusive leadership strengthen his position as a viable candidate.

Another prominent name being considered for the Senate appointment is Jeannine Frisby LaRue, Executive Vice President of Strategy & Business Development for Moxie Strategies , headquartered in Asbury Park. If appointed, LaRue would be the second openly gay African-American woman to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Governor Murphy's track record of making groundbreaking appointments adds weight to the candidacies of both Fuscarino and LaRue. Their potential appointments could mark significant milestones in the representation of the LGBTQ+ community in the Senate.

As the political landscape in New Jersey braces for this significant transition, the upcoming decision by Governor Murphy will be closely watched. The choice of Menendez's successor not only has immediate political implications but also the potential to have an enduring historical impact on the Senate and the nation.

Menendez's resignation, and the subsequent appointment, are expected in the coming weeks, setting the stage for a pivotal moment in New Jersey's political history.
