Overworked and Underpaid: Study Finds Texas Teachers Stretched to the Limit

    2024-09-02

Texas Teachers Stretched Thin Amid Excessive Workloads and Stagnant Pay

A new study has revealed the stark realities facing educators in the Lone Star State, with Texas teachers emerging as the most overworked professionals in the nation.

According to the survey conducted by Twinkl, a platform that provides teaching resources, a staggering 89% of respondents believe teachers are underpaid, while 83% think they work too many hours for their compensation.

While the average American believes teachers should work just under 41 hours per week, data shows Texas educators put in an astounding 54.7 hours on the job – the highest figure nationwide. That gap is amplified in Texas, where residents think teachers should work 14½ fewer hours than they do.

The discrepancy extends to salaries as well. According to the National Education Association, Texans think teachers should earn around $73,105 annually, yet the average teacher in the state makes only $62,463.
