Walmart Unveils First 3D-Printed Expansion in Athens, Tennessee

Walmart has made a bold step into the future by utilizing 3D-printing technology to expand its Athens, Tennessee, store. In collaboration with Alquist 3D, a company based in Greeley, Colorado, the retail giant has constructed an 8,000-square-foot, 20-foot-high addition to its online pickup and delivery space, marking Walmart’s first large-scale use of 3D printing technology.

The expansion is a significant milestone in the world of construction, as it is one of the largest freestanding 3D-printed commercial concrete structures in the U.S. Alquist 3D’s Founder and Chairman, Zachary Mannheimer, expressed excitement about the partnership, calling it a major step forward for 3D construction printing (3DCP) technology. “This project demonstrates Walmart’s forward-thinking leadership,” Mannheimer said.

Patrick Callahan, CEO of Alquist 3D, emphasized that the knowledge gained from this venture would enhance their future work on residential 3D printing projects. "We tackled the most challenging project we could find and completed it with excellence," he noted.

This partnership could revolutionize how commercial and residential buildings are constructed, potentially setting a new standard for efficiency and innovation in the industry.
