In a groundbreaking move to combat environmental pollution, California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation that will effectively eliminate plastic shopping bags from major retailers across the state. Set to take effect on January 1, 2026, the new law will transform the shopping experience for millions of Californians.

This legislation builds upon a 2014 initiative that banned thin plastic bags but allowed thicker, supposedly reusable alternatives. However, studies revealed these bags were rarely repurposed, leading to an unexpected increase in plastic waste. The updated law closes this loophole, mandating a complete shift away from plastic at grocery checkouts.

Shoppers will need to adapt by bringing their own reusable bags or opting for paper alternatives. While produce bags will remain available, the familiar "paper or plastic" choice will become a relic of the past.

Environmental groups have praised the move, citing it as a crucial step in reducing plastic pollution. However, critics argue that the state government should prioritize other pressing issues like crime and homelessness.
