Pedestrian dies while crossing Sweeten Creek Rd in Arden; Asheville police investigating

ASHEVILLE - After a pedestrian was struck and killed on Sweeten Creek Road Aug. 8, city police patrol officers are investigating the fatal collision.

Asheville Police Department officers responded to the collision near the 4000 block of Sweeten Creek Road, just south of the Pensacola Avenue intersection, around 9:56 p.m. on Aug. 8, according to an Aug. 15 news release from APD.

From the preliminary investigation, it appears a pedestrian, Joel Wayne Tucker, 76, was trying to cross the road when he was struck by a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu traveling south on Sweeten Creek Road, the release said.

"It was not a hit-and-run," APD spokesperson Rick Rice told the Citizen Times. "The driver remained on the scene and was cooperative with investigators."

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk, Rice added.

Tucker was transported to Mission Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following day. Tucker's next of kin has been notified.
