    When does it get cold in Asheville? Here's when experts say it will cool off for fall

    Asheville residents are starting to feel temperatures cool down for fall following a summer full of near-record-breaking dryness and high temperatures.

    Despite the recent relief, the National Weather Service forecast for the week of Aug. 26 shows highs in the 90s once again. So what do historical trends say on when we might see temperatures really begin to drop?

    Here's what to know about Asheville's climate according to data from the NWS.

    When will it start to cool down in Asheville?

    Jake Wimberley, a meteorologist for the NWS in Greer, South Carolina, told the Citizen Times that temperatures have already begun to trend downward for the fall season according to historical averages.

    "It's just decreasing a little bit each day, just reflecting the fact that usually, the hottest weather of the year has already passed by now," Wimberley said.

    He added that the average date on which temperatures in Asheville fall below 80 degrees is Sept. 14 .

    A longer-range forecast from the weather service calls for a high near 75 on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

    When does it get cold in Asheville?

    As for truly cold weather - break out your winter coat cold - area averages say we have slightly longer to wait.

    Wimberley said that the average date recorded for the first freeze in Asheville is Oct. 25 .

    Average temperature in Asheville by month

    These are the average high and low temperatures in Asheville, according to U.S. Climate Data.

    • January : Average high temperature of 47 degrees, average low temperature of 28 degrees.
    • February : Average high temperature of 50 degrees, average low temperature of 31 degrees.
    • March : Average high temperature of 58 degrees, average low temperature of 37 degrees.
    • April : Average high temperature of 67 degrees, average low temperature of 45 degrees.
    • May : Average high temperature of 75 degrees, average low temperature of 53 degrees.
    • June : Average high temperature of 82 degrees, average low temperature of 61 degrees.
    • July : Average high temperature of 85 degrees, average low temperature of 65 degrees.
    • August : Average high temperature of 84 degrees, average low temperature of 64 degrees.
    • September : Average high temperature of 77 degrees, average low temperature of 57 degrees.
    • October : Average high temperature of 68 degrees, average low temperature of 46 degrees.
