Kites and apples and Oz! Fall is coming in hot (no pun intended) this weekend, with favorites that kick off the season. Enjoy the long weekend and the unofficial end of summer. And while you’re at it, take a look at WNC Parent’s full September calendar and much more at wncparent.com .

Does your organization or business offer family-friendly events? Let us know! Stay in touch on social media @wncparent and get your events on our calendar by emailing chris@worthyplace.com .

    Ongoing:

The WCU Fine Art Museum at Bardo Arts Center has reopened with “At the Table,” on display through Dec. 6. Admission is free. The museum is open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesday – Friday and 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Thursday. Contemplate themes of community, power, and representation as explored through At the Table. The works in the exhibition, which feature the recurring motif of the table, both literal and metaphorical, use this common piece of furniture to signify a place where people come together in connection, endure and overcome injustice, and make decisions that can change an individual life or the course of humanity. For details, visit arts.wcu.edu/table .

“Finding the Force…Awakening an Empire,” a Star Wars exhibition , is open at the Upcountry History Museum in Greenville, S.C. through Nov. 3. The exhibition brings together a unique presentation of the history, the costuming, the creatives, and the characters, highlighting the legends and legacies of this storied franchise, and providing insight into the elements that have consistently connected us to a galaxy far, far away for over 45 years. For details, visit upcountryhistory.org .

    This weekend

The North Carolina Apple Festival is Aug. 30 – Sept. 2 in Hendersonville. For details, visit ncapplefestival.org .

The Mile High Kite Festival is Aug. 31 at Beech Mountain. As the highest town in Eastern America, Beech Mountain is the perfect place to fly a kite. Free kites will be given to children while supplies last. Additional fun activities include races with kids pulling parachute kites, face painting, kiddie rides, live music and a variety of craft and food vendors.
