ASHEVILLE - About 20 gunshots were reportedly heard in Livingston Apartments the night a mother died after a fight involving multiple weapons June 24, according to recently released police records.

The first police officer arrived at the apartment complex on Livingston Street about 8:02 p.m., after a 911 call reported gunshots at 7:58 p.m., according to officer call notes. Officers found four people, three suffering from gunshot wounds and one from blunt force trauma, according to previous Citizen Times reporting .

The fight involved a rifle, handgun and baseball bat, with more than one person having fired shots, according to the report. One resident reported bullets had flown through their apartment window.

Officers found a woman on the ground, possibly shot by an assault rifle, the notes said. EMS arrived on scene, but another unit was called in for a different victim who was hit with a baseball bat. An additional victim was taken to the hospital by their mother, the police record said.

Someone was detained at 8:15 p.m., but the notes said “the actual shooter” was a male subject who fled the scene in a van. A 911 caller stated he was trying to chase down the van despite 911 dispatch telling him not to.

One of the gunshot victims – later identified as Ashley Ryan Waddell, 40, of Asheville – was pronounced dead around 8:25 p.m. An autopsy was performed, which determined she was shot in the pelvis around 7:30 p.m.

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office was called in to assist, and a second person was detained 8:48 p.m., according to the record.

A GoFundMe raising money for Waddell’s cremation expenses said she “lost her life defending her family.”

After the scene was secured, the family came to the apartment to pick up the victim’s dogs around 11:30 p.m. The Citizen Times attempted to reach Waddell’s family.

“Ashley was my everything, and I still can’t find all the right words to explain how I feel,” her mother, Diane Brigmon, wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Ashley was always smiling and was always positive no matter what happened.”

APD officers later charged Isaiah Rayshawn Waddell, 23, of Asheville, with attempted first-degree murder of a 16-year-old juvenile. According to birth records from the Buncombe County Register of Deeds, Ashley Waddell is the mother of Isaiah Waddell.

Waddell remains in the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $100,000 bond. He has an upcoming court date of July 16, according to an online court database.

"I was able to confirm with detectives that the incident is still under investigation and there have been no further charges filed at this time," spokesperson Rick Rice said in response to whether the second person detained was charged with anything related to this incident.
