    Asheville homicide victim identified by police; juvenile suspect charged with murder

    ASHEVILLE - A juvenile has been charged with first-degree murder following a fight July 13 that left a man dead, according to a news release from the Asheville Police Department, which said police worked in consultation with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office.

    APD detectives on July 14 identified Caleb Savon Gilliam, 29, as the homicide victim. His next of kin has been notified.

    Asheville police officers responded to a report of a fight with weapons at Livingston Street Apartments around 7:22 p.m. on July 13, where they found a man suffering from serious injuries from the altercation. The victim was transported to Mission Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

    "Upon arrival, they found a man with serious injuries resulting from blunt force trauma sustained during a physical altercation (no weapons.)," APD spokesperson Samantha Booth told the Citizen Times July 13 via email.

    She said this is the sixth homicide in the City of Asheville so far this year.
