City planners in Washington made some bold decisions after learning how bridges and overpasses were affected by the 1989 Bay Area Earthquake. The quake, which registered 6.9 on the Richter Scale, caused the Nimitz Freeway on Interstate 880 in Oakland to collapse. Entire sections of the upper deck collapsed directly on the lower deck, crushing more than two dozen cars and their occupants.
FTC challenges Kroger-Albertsons merger, citing risks to consumer choice
SEATTLE — There's a lot at stake in a federal courtroom in Portland as a judge hears arguments for and against the Albertsons - Kroger grocery store merger plan. The Federal Trade Commission is working to stop the merger, arguing that it will be bad for consumers. Both sides delivered opening statements on Monday in a packed courtroom presided by U.S. District Judge Adrienne Nelson.
Whooping Cough Cases on the Rise in Washington State
Washington state has see a rapid increase in whooping cough cases this year. The infectious cough is spreading rapidly throughout Eastern Washington. Benton County has reported two confirmed cases and one case is confirmed in Walla Walla County. Grant County has reported 21 confirmed cases with 7 suspected cases since June. Retreat Fire Is Shutting Down Recreation in WA
The Retreat Fire, which began on July 23 in the Rimrock area of Washington, is currently 85% contained and has burned 45,601 acres as of August 19. According to the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, most of the fire southwest of Naches is under control, though some areas and roads, including WDFW's Wildlife Creek Area and sites along the Tieton River and U.S. Highway 12, will remain closed until at least September 23 due to safety concerns. The closures impact activities such as rock climbing, hunting, scouting, and fishing, and will be reassessed after the expiration date.
