Swimmers Itch has been reported at Thompson's West End Park Beach in Washburn.

The "itch" happens when microscopic organisms try to burrow under the skin as they dry out. They don't get into the skin, but their attempts cause an allergic reaction.

Benadryl cream, Epsom salt or baking soda baths can help relieve itchy symptoms.

Swimmers itch can be avoided by vigorously drying with a towel after getting out of the water and changing immediately. Showering immediately after swimming if possible also helps immensely. In addition, the parasites that cause swimmers itch are most active in the morning, so swimming later in the afternoon can also help reduce exposure.

Information provided by the city of Washburn.
