A new communications tower should improve cell service in Ashland and the surrounding area.

Architecture and engineering firm Ramaker and communications infrastructure owner/operator Vertical Bridge will lease city property along Rail Drive and install a the tower. Plans call for a 165-foot high antenna surrounded by a fenced area in exchange for $800 per month in rent.

City council approved the five-year lease agreement during the Sept. 25 meeting.

The land is currently vacant and is not in the immediate proximity to homeowners, City Planner Steven Wiley said.

Part of the city’s strategic plan calls for consistent, reliable and affordable high-speed internet.

Council member Kevin Seefeldt wondered if there has been any community feedback about the project. City officials said they haven’t received any.

According to information provided at the meeting, equipment for Verizon Wireless will be installed on the tower. There is space for additional equipment.
