Hiking the Chain O'Lakes
Late summer has arrived in the upper Midwest, and despite the influx of out-of-state tourists, I suspect that the beauty of August remains a well-kept secret from most of the country. Kids are already going back to school in other states, and while much of the U.S. bakes we’re enjoying cool mornings and moderating temperatures and insect activity. It’s also sweet corn season and South Shore denizens are excited about the annual arrival of Bob the Corn Man (one of the first things I learned...

'That’s how being a best friend goes'
After meeting in fifth grade at Grand Forks Air Force Base in 1975 me and Roman Espirtu became inseparable. We were best friends and did everything together. We played baseball and football. We built forts in the woods. We sat next to each other in class and at lunch. We spent the night at one another’s house. And when one of us was getting into trouble so was the other. That’s how being a best friend goes. ...

Growing up fast
Nature is amazing. All summer, the plants and the animals are busy growing. Recently, a pair of robins decided to build a nest for raising their second brood above the front entryway to Farmstead. The timbering there provides a nice nook for nesting, and while they find my comings and goings with people’s orders for curbside pickup most annoying, the pair tolerated our presence. Steve took his phone and reached up for a picture, showing us that the pair had laid three lovely blue eggs....
Farm living is the life for me
Hello friends, This week I am writing my annual column about hobby farming/independent living and how ingrained it is in my way of life. Shortly after I write this column I will be loading the pups into the GMC Hotel and heading to the Montana mountains to spend a few days camping, hiking and ATVing with my daughter, Selina, who is a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. ...

Following in this tradition are the Lake Shore Shooters: six Bay Area soccer standouts — Harper Todus, Ava Walworth, Evie Nye, Chloe Larson, Cali Mika and Aubri Mika — who have emerged as a U13 (turning age 13 in 2024) national force in 5v5 soccer. After going 4-0 in an Aug....
Wonderful waves
Natural Connections The paddleboards’ fins caught on thick tangles of aquatic vegetation as we pushed through the Lost Creek Estuary near Cornucopia, WI. The open waters of Lake Superior promised easier paddling ahead. Where the stream met the bay, waves and currents had shifted the sand into spits and bars. When my fin dragged on one of them, slowing me to a stop, the busyness of summer suddenly caught up to me, too. ...
It’s not you, it’s me
I’m sorry, Swallowtail, if my initial reaction was that of disappointment. It’s not you, it’s me. I so wanted to see a monarch butterfly today, and your flash in front of me got my hopes all aflutter. But when I followed your flutter to the wild bergamot, I saw wings of yellow and black, not orange and black. Never mind my moment of letdown. You wear it well, that yellow, with those mimicry blue and orange dots behind your body. ...

Pet of the week
This is Buster, an intelligent and energetic year old bulldog mix. He loves people and thoroughly enjoys playing with his toys and is always eager to sit for treats. His strong motivation for food makes training him a breeze. However, due to his young age, he may not be suitable for households with cats or small children. This big-hearted puppy requires regular exercise and a structured routine. He would thrive in a home with another dog that enjoys wrestling, playing, and running, or doggy daycare. A tribal leader and conservationists urged state officials Thursday to reject plans to relocate part of an aging northern Wisconsin pipeline, warning that the threat of a catastrophic spill would still exist along the new route. About 12 miles (19 kilometers) of the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline runs across the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa's reservation. The pipeline transports up to 23 million gallons (about 87 million liters) of oil and natural gas daily from the city of Superior, Wisconsin, through Michigan to...

The Ashland Daily Press can trace its beginnings to the summer of 1872, when Sam Fifield began printing the Weekly Press. The first edition of The Daily Press then came out on March 5, 1888. Fifield soon lost interest in the paper and sold the operation to Joe Chapple. The Daily Press business was soon left in to his brother, John C. Chapple, who had started working at the paper in 1890 at the age of 15. The paper was sold to J.T. Hooper in 1910, and then again to a Milwaukee businessman named Green. He, in turn, sold it back to Myrta Chapple, John’s wife, and John spent 56 years working every job from printer’s devil to publisher until his death in 1946. Myrta worked on the paper until the early 1950s and upon her death in 1973, she had one of the longest newspaper careers of any woman in the nation. Their son John B. Chapple worked as a newspaperman at The Daily Press for 75 years, from 1925 through his death in 1989, when he still was contributing stories. The Daily Press was sold to Morgan Murphy’s Superior Telegram in 1956, and in 1996, the paper became part of Murphy McGinnis Media. On Jan. 31, 2003, Superior Publishing — an affiliate of investment firm MCG Capital Corporation — purchased the firm. American Consolidated Media bought the newspaper in 2007. On March 14, 2014, The Daily Press was among the papers acquired from ACM by the Adams Publishing Group. As part of the APG Media of Wisconsin group, the Ashland Daily Press is part of six subscription newspapers and eight shoppers in that region.
