Ashland addresses increased price for upcoming multi million dollar project
Ashland officials took some responsibility for why an upcoming city project is expected to cost more than three times originally expected and explained why the cost has gone up. Public Works Director John Butler said during Tuesday’s city council meeting the city should have done a better job verifying its original cost estimate for a multi-million dollar water intake pipe project. The pipe stretches far into Lake Superior to draw in the city’s water, but is in need of replacement. ...
Exploring State Natural Areas
Despite all the news about heat domes and following the warmest winter on record in Wisconsin, this summer so far has been mostly cool and wet, at least in the northern half of the state. Water levels around the Wisconsin River weren’t at flood stage this week, but they sure were high and fast for summer. Much of my camping trip in the Star Lake area was wet and dreary, but that’s pretty typical of late May. It wasn’t bad enough to keep me from...

Ominous Approach
The forecast had called for afternoon storms. This was a surprise to no one, as temperatures had rocketed up into the low 80’s. The air was heavy with humidity, as if we had suddenly jumped to July for the day. The mosquitoes loved it—just as much as they loved trying to bite us. Brilliant sun accented by the staccato notes of puff clouds danced by in the azure sky as we kept an eye on the heavens during the day. At Farmstead Creamery, I kept...

A new coralroot
Thickets of balsam fir and hemlock crowded along the wide, flat trail, cocooning us in their shade. Sunshine beckoned up ahead, and wetlands filled many swales. The Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Nature Preserve in Door County protects unique habitats and allows access on lovely trails. “Oh look!” exclaimed Karen, as she knelt to take a closer look at a delightful stalk of raspberry-striped flowers. On each of the dozen flowers, five graceful petals and sepals fanned out above a plump, pear-shaped lower lip. The upper...

Hi Everyone, I’m Georgie! I’m a petite little lady who is curious, affectionate (I like to nibble), and playful. Then there is this job that keeps me on the go and pays my bills. This week I was given a tip about a unique chain of lakes in Washburn County called the Spider Lake chain...

The performance was made possible through a contest organized by Duluth-based radio station 95KQDS. To win, schools had to submit a video of its choir preforming Foreigner’s classic song “I want to Know What Love Is.” KQ listeners then voted online for their favorite. ...

West Star Lake's variety a treat
Like the guy in the “WKRP in Cincinnati” song, I’ve spent most of my time recently packing and unpacking and was looking forward to some down time in the woods. Once the essentials have been taken care of, there comes a point where you have to step back and let some stuff stay in boxes so your brain can reset. Getting outside is the best way for my own brain to reset and I was glad to have a chance to do that last week...

The Ashland Daily Press can trace its beginnings to the summer of 1872, when Sam Fifield began printing the Weekly Press. The first edition of The Daily Press then came out on March 5, 1888. Fifield soon lost interest in the paper and sold the operation to Joe Chapple. The Daily Press business was soon left in to his brother, John C. Chapple, who had started working at the paper in 1890 at the age of 15. The paper was sold to J.T. Hooper in 1910, and then again to a Milwaukee businessman named Green. He, in turn, sold it back to Myrta Chapple, John’s wife, and John spent 56 years working every job from printer’s devil to publisher until his death in 1946. Myrta worked on the paper until the early 1950s and upon her death in 1973, she had one of the longest newspaper careers of any woman in the nation. Their son John B. Chapple worked as a newspaperman at The Daily Press for 75 years, from 1925 through his death in 1989, when he still was contributing stories. The Daily Press was sold to Morgan Murphy’s Superior Telegram in 1956, and in 1996, the paper became part of Murphy McGinnis Media. On Jan. 31, 2003, Superior Publishing — an affiliate of investment firm MCG Capital Corporation — purchased the firm. American Consolidated Media bought the newspaper in 2007. On March 14, 2014, The Daily Press was among the papers acquired from ACM by the Adams Publishing Group. As part of the APG Media of Wisconsin group, the Ashland Daily Press is part of six subscription newspapers and eight shoppers in that region.
