The planning department meeting was attended by board members Ronald Bucher, Ryan Kuehl and acting chair Ann O’Connor. Absent were Brian Kruse and David Levy. The board addressed two main cases. A strong ridge of high pressure is hovering over the area at this time. This system will continue to bring in smoke from the Canada and Northwest United States wildfires through Friday. This will bring in some hazy conditions across the region Thursday night into Friday. An air quality alert is in effect for this very reason now until Friday 9 a.m. CDT Friday. People should exercise caution when going outside during these times, especially people that have asthma and other lung issues. Lows overnight Thursday will drop into the 60s with mainly clear conditions otherwise. Highs for Friday will climb into the mid to upper 90s with some areas reaching 100. With the constant dry northwest flow, breezy winds with speeds around 10 to 15 mph, that will be picking up during the day Friday and abnormally dry conditions will bring in the potential for some fire concerns, especially into North and Western Greater Nebraska. A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 9 p.m. MDT for this very reason. People in and outside of the headline are urged to not burn outdoors, discard anything flammable properly and in the event of a fire, call 9-1-1. Mainly sunny conditions are expected during the day Friday.
