Amid her battle with cancer, Princess Kate Middleton took the time to comment on a cause that is very important to her: losing a child. Here, read her touching words, what motivated her to write them and her personal connection with pregnancy loss.

Kate Middleton makes public comment for Baby Loss Awareness Week

Baby Loss Awareness Week is something that the United Kingdom observes every week from October 9 to October 15. Its sole purpose is to draw attention and bring comfort to people who have suffered from the loss of a child.

It also coincides with Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, which is held on October 15 every year.

This year, on October 15, Kate Middleton took the time to send a message of strength to anyone affected by infant and pregnancy loss on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Baby Loss Awareness Week is such an important moment to support those who have experienced the devastation of baby loss,” wrote the Princess of Wales. “ Sending love , strength and hope to anyone affected. “

The mother of three also used the hashtag #WaveofLight, which is in reference to the Baby Loss Awareness Week organization’s annual candle-lighting event on October 15.

On her joint account with her husband, Prince William, the princess reported several videos of various people lighting candles at 7 pm GMT—which is when the official candle lighting took place.

Middleton herself also lit a candle, which you can see in the post below.

Kate Middleton’s history with pregnancy loss

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day is especially important to Middleton, who has seen firsthand how much it affects someone’s life.

British Equestrian Zara Tindall and great-granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother has suffered two miscarriages in both 2016 and 2018.

I had a miscarriage in 2016, and afterward, loads of people wrote to me and Mike [Tindall]  to say they’d been through the same thing,” Tindall told The Sunday Times. “In our case, it was something that was really rare; it was nature saying, ‘This one’s not right.’ For me, the worst bit was that we had to tell everyone—everyone knew.”

Secondly, Meghan Markle revealed that about a year after her son Archie was born, she shuddered from a miscarriage.

“I felt a sharp cramp. I dropped to the floor with him [Archie] in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right,” Markle revealed. “I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.

“Hours later, I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband’s [Prince Harry] hand. I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both our tears. Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we’d heal.

In the past, Middleton has shown her support for people suffering from pregnancy loss, mainly on X.

“Taking a moment this #BabyLossAwarenessWeek to think about all those who’ve been affected by pregnancy and baby loss,” she wrote in 2022.

She also visited the Institute of Reproductive and Development Biology at Imperial College London during Baby Loss Awareness Week in 2020. During that appearance, Middleton learned about the research being done on infant loss and giving birth prematurely.
