    1914: The Ashland County jail has lodged 826 men since the beginning of the year due to them being out of work.

    1924: A poisonous night snake arrived in Ashland yesterday in a shipment of bananas from Guatemala. It was captured by Wally Billett.

    1924: Menard Hotel is once again open to the public. It was in war service as the board headquarters for the U. S. Coast Guard.

    1924: Police Chief McGeehan is “hosting” a stray mule and horse, both of whom tore up some neighborhood gardens.

    1944: Herman Fondek,67, of Ashland and a dockman at the Reese Coal Co. was accidentally killed when caught between the coal bucket and the coal boat.
